If you’re new to the realm of graphic and web design, and you’re really quite struggling to get people intersected in the services that you offer, we have a few choice tips that will help you stand out from the crowd. Yes, it’s really not quite as hard as you might think, and with a little elbow grease and some willingness to work, you’ll quickly find your doors swamped with much more business than you ever thought possible.
- Use a Postcard: This is something we’re seeing out of a whole lot of graphic design schools. What we mean by that is this: We’re seeing a lot of universities encouraging their students to do this when leaving the school and looking for work. Now, that might not make it the best recommendation ever, but it is quite the solid idea. Rather than sending a tradition 8.5 by 11 print letter to your potential clients, instead send them a postcard. You can have these printed up without too much fuss, and they’re not hard to design, either. The basic layout should put something clever and engaging on the front, while the backside details who you are, what you do, and perhaps even what you charge. Of course, you’ll also want to put your contact information there as well.
- Use Craig’s List: Another great way to market your design company or freelance operation is to simply throw up a listing on Craig’s List. We mean it. You can look for work under the Gigs and Work headings, while simultaneously putting your own name under the Services label. In this way, you can start taking a stab at local business, including building connections that might lead to further work within your area. And when we talk about promoting your business, we do tend to focus a lot on the benefits of going local. As such, Craig’s List is just about the best way we can think of to start developing your very own, local pool to work with. Just be wary of scammers and spammers, and don’t ever do work for free when you don’t know the person involved very well! It’s not likely to have a happy ending.
