These designers would frequently confess that they could not "think" without a pencil in their hand.
Designers did not have to worry about production problems or technicalities.

Before computers, most designers backed into their careers from a fine arts background. Many were originally illustrators, why? Print and video were laid out as pencil sketches. When the concept was prepared for presentation, a tight full color magic-marker rendering was made by the designer. It was drawn on a heavy vellum stock, allowing for tracing of letter forms and product shots. This is what the client approved.

And before magic markers they used grease/wax pencils, which looked amazing
