So the pen tool is worth mastering, can take a bit of time but it will be worth it in the end.

Menu [EDIT]
<keyboard Shortcuts>
v Tools v Menu Commands
> Object
> Path
> Remove Anchor Point
v Shortcut
press Shift+Ctrl+R
press OK
save
But you have to remember the [Sift]-[Ctrl]-[R] to remove a anchor point and continuing path edition.
I hope this will be helpful

Without pen tool illustrator is nothing, because are vector curve and other only pen tool can create.
I disagree..
The pen tool and the tablet.. whatever one you have... OR any other device, application, program, anything you have used to create your piece of art ARE ALL TOOLS.. EXTENTIONS OF CREATIVITY.. Just because you use these things dont mean your better or it is better for you.. For some its a plus and some its a minus. THINK OF IT LIKE GARDENING... Rake = Photoshop, Broom = Illustrator.. Ho = Flash.. Pick = 3d Max.. Shovel = Firefox..... Design comes from within the tool you pick will help in creation of your garden

I agree that software is just a tool used to express creativity. But I get what m.p. is saying, that you limit what you can do in Illustrator if you don't really use or know how to use the pen tool. It's like your example "Broom = Illustrator", but without the pen tool it's like using a broom with many of the bristles missing.... so sweeping would be harder and less effectiveI disagree..

The Pen tool has become notorious as a tough tool for Illustrator users to learn and master.
So over the past couple of versions, Adobe has been offering alternatives to the Pen tool such as the totally rebuilt Pencil tool.
Now the Pen tool itself has been enhanced to show a “Rubber Band†Preview of the results as you are drawing with the Pen.
