Are you talking about editing an image in a clipping mask?

is that possible to recolor the image in illustrator? how about adjusting the tones into high level?

If you are talking about a rastered image, you can select the image then go to Edit>Edit Colors>Adjust Color Balance... and there you can change the tones of the image with the rgb/cmy sliders. But if you want a more precise color change, then it would be best to do that in Photoshop.

Ok. I think I understand what you are trying to do. You have a photo which you have brought into Illustrator and to which you have applied a clipping or transparency mask. Does the photo show up in the links panel? Edit your photo in photoshop and relink it. Illustrator is a drawing program. You can select the clipping mask object and use the Clipping Mask tool to Edit Contents.

People occasionally apply a color to a Black & White image bitmap, but that doesn't sound like what you are doing. If you have used the Image trace function (live trace), then your photo has been turned into objects you can modify in Illustrator. Once again, this doesn't seem like what your asking.

So, modify photos in Photoshop, and use the appropriate resolution and mode, to the task. :)

I thought there was something that after the masking, i can edit the color, i understand now. one more... about to make the color more brighter, i mean if the CH request to make it more red, but then my color panel which is red has got the limit. is there any features in illustrator like in photoshop that we can make more brighten the color? like ctrl M command in photoshop, a kind of that.

hmm.. if your color picker is at is limit, you may have to desaturated the color so it "looks" brighter. Try Window>Color Guide and there you can choose a tint of that red color. But it's hard to give a perfect answer without knowing what you are working on looks like. Are you able to post a link to what you are working on? You might get a better answer

You can define new color swatches to get what might be "brighter" and apply that to your bitmap. If you have bottomed out your color gamut, that is about it. If you are working in CMYK, their are some vivid reds that cannot be made in 4/c process. Maybe a spot ink color will work. How bright that appears will depend on the photo.

Another method might be to make your raster image a duotone in photoshop. With duotones you can define a Pantone spot color that Illustrator recognizes and still have some shadow definition. With duotones, you adjust the curves for each ink. You could have a two color image, perhaps Black and Pantone 192, each ink has a separate adjustable channel. Once again, this is a Photoshop solution and presumes you can go to press with a spot color.

If you print a lot of two color jobs, duotones are a great way to get interesting color into halftones. This is essentially two color process.
If you convert the doutone back to CMYK you still get a nice color image.

I suspect I am getting away from the simple solution you were hoping for in Illustrator. There is a reason that Adobe can sell the Creative Suite bundle. I hope that this is somewhat helpful in getting the brighter red that your client wants.:)

at this point I can't quit tell whats going on. It sound like you have brought an photo into Illustrator and applied live trace to turn it into vectors and then used a clipping mask. If you upgraded Illustrator recently you have to open the Image Trace window under the Window menu to get the tracing options you need. Otherwise the default is black and white. The menu for tracing has moved. I hope this helps.
