If that's the case then either convert the strokes to outlines first or you can change your settings so that strokes scale proportionally like this:

I always use this setting - I'm not sure why anyone would want to maintain stroke weight when scaling - that would make me go crazy

I've done that withe strokes. Even just converted strokes to outline paths. It only happens when shrinking the object down quite small... It's as if some of the point on the outline just shift one way or another.. Some line weights become thicker, others become smaller.. Not sure how else to explain it.

58 downloadsThis is an example of what's happening... It only happens when I try to make something extremely small-and not always. Which is rare, and mostly when there are a lot of vertical/horizontal lines..

I think it's an anti-aliasing issue. go to edit >preferences> general and there's a checkbox for "anti-aliased artwork" is that on or off?
if it's off turn it on!
bit confused though because the large view doesn't look jagged and all artwork would look a little strange.
Sorry Kristijp - I haven't seen this behaviour before so I'm clutching at straws.
what version of CS are you using? does it look weird in illustrator or just when you export?

Anti-aliased is on. I'm using CS 5.5. It looks like this in Illustrator, which I've worked in for years and never had such an issue. I can't imagine that I've just never scaled something down quite this small before, but maybe that's the case. Or I've accidentally changed some setting while working late hours. I'll have to do some more looking into it. I'll post back here if I figure it out. Thanks for your help.

When you said it's set to outlines, do you mean you converted the text to outlines? If so, what happens if you leave the text live and then scale it?

This worked perfectly! Thank you so much. That was incredibly frustrating. Still not sure if I've always had that checked or recently checked it accidentally... but I'm sure happy to have it fixed.
