I'm glad to help with either coding and designing.

I'll see if there are any pre-made tutorials on skinning. If not, I'll start a general guide here at DC.

1) In the beginning.. there was Photoshop. Or whatever image editor you use. A good skin always starts with a mockup in the image editor. I always start with a good idea of what my final result will look like and make sure that idea is recorded in the image editor.

Next step... slicing into HTML.

Exactly. If you can slice a site template into HTML, you're halfway to making a custom skin. The learning curve is steep though as you have to dig into the vBulletin template system and learn what goes where.

Typically you can start with the Header, Footer, and Navbar templates and get a good feel on how they work.

Nice work, feels like I'm in a Borg cube. I'm happy to help you learn how to do it here if you like. It will seem like a pain in the arse at first, but it isn't so bad.

Open up the Header template and take a look at it. Make a few changes, see how it reacts. Note that the Header and Footer template typically go together with tables opened in the header being closed in the footer.

You can also write to me [email protected] for more info on services, thanks.

you need to know how to code the template as if you were going to use it on a website(plain html)
then just figure out where things go on the template, ie: header is the top of the page, footer the bottom, etc
_____
if you can't figure it out I'll gladly take on the job ;)

The whole skinning system looks different in the new version, has anyone dug into it yet and done a new skin for the new version?

The template system takes a bit of getting used to. My suggestion is to find the buttons:

[ << >> ]

Which means to expand all of the templates. It's easier than using the dropdown menus.

Well it would be great if someone could post an in-depth tutorial here on how to design and code a new skin for vB, as it's rather daunting to the newbie (such as myself). Even with the template editing options expanded, it's easy to get "lost" in it all! LOL.

This thread is pretty old, I don't think it's active anymore, but the onyl way to learn VB is by trial and error...Ask one of your freinds with a license to set you up a private admin account and you can start playing around with the code...In no time I'm sure you'll understand the basics of VB... :D
