Anyways, just started using Twitter and it seems like it could be a effective yet simple marketing tool. Does anyone else here use Twitter?

And, just right before posting here, I am about to post a topic about twitter, and ask DC if they can have one, another way of keeping DC people and other designers updated.

Actually I opened an account for DC a few days ago. I think I will start using it now. Please follow: DC on Twitter

It doesn't work
I found the correct link: DesignContest.net (designcontests) on Twitter
I recently started using Twitter, but I mainly use it to keep up on the latest updates from my favorite websites. I don't "tweet" much
It seems to have more of a benefit for organizations and corporations. I'm in charge of using Twitter for my workplace, and it works great for promoting day-of events and increasing web traffic.

It is just so easy to streamline your daily tasks as a freelance or full time web designer with apps like twitter, and the user base is passionate about spreading news and links you "tweet".
Not only that, but twitter is so easy to manipulate and find out who is reading about you and how much your messages are being checked, forwarded, etc.
You just have to find a niche audience, deliver a unique message, and enjoy the immense traffic you'll get. Don't neglect it.

tsmith, very true, that's why I've started using twitter for DC. Though I don't use it that much really, just basic announcements. If you have any tips on effective use of twitter, I would really like to hear them
Well I am not entirely sure how far you want to take it. I can definitely see this site getting good traffic through smart marketing. You have an active community, paid contests, and lots of professional freelance knowledge floating around.
You should definitely announce all new Contests, paid and non-profit, as well as Community-driven ones. Announce unique and engaging forum posts, new team members, site additions or large modifications, and any freelance related news (freelanceswitch.com and the like)
Some helpful links are:
- TweetDeck: Streamlines tweets.
- Digsby: Combines all your social media apps.
- Tiny URLs: URL shortener, useful due to character limitations.
