I think this is the first documentary ever about a typo. I haven't seen yet.

Helvetica (2007)
Director: Gary Hustwit

A documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture, which looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives

Anyone knows and could recommend some documentaries about design?

I have seen and enjoyed it.
By the way, I have chanced the title of the thread, added Helvetica to it - this way people will know what documantary you are talking about.

Ok, at first time, I posted with the title "Have you seen Documentary (Helvetica, 2007) ?" but I was trying to generalize including other documentaries about design.

Still need to see it and also need to get the proper helvectica font too. I've got it on my laptop but not really sure if it is the proper one though.

Good documentary...
It's interesting to hear top typographers having different approach to not only Helvetica but typography in general.

A great documentary that really shows typography in the real world, among other things. I can't really suggest any other documentaries but I would be interested in hearing about other good ones. I find going to some typography/design lectures from good designers can prove to be just as insightful.

I knew Helvetica was common - it's interesting to see just how much it's been used and maybe over-used? I was advised once, to try and choose Helvetica last. That rule of thumb has helped me broaden my font knowledge - it's also helped some designs look less generic.

In design school I also was taught to put Helvetica along with Ariel and the other similar typefaces at the end of my list when choosing a font. But now in my line of work they are a consistently at the top of my list.

Its a total bummer sometimes, and I do try to put my foot down when I really believe it should be something else.

I should check out this documentary, sounds interesting.

I've watched the documentary several times - It's great to see how things used to be designed. At school we took a very hands on approach to everything the first year and a half. At the time I wish I had the respect for it I do now.

In the field I use Helvetica more than ever - not always as a result of my own taste, but more the clients.

I really tried to make a conscious effort to watch it, but fell asleep about half way through. I think it was partly because I was tired and partly cuz it didn't help.

Yes I have also seen it and loved it. It was great to see the evolution of style and function through typography. But after watching it I wondered which side other designers gravitated towards: The traditionalist opinion where the words are stating facts and other things should be expressive or the modernist opinion where the words (so also the typography) can be the expressive parts and can be more than just Helvetica.

I'm a modernist all the way!!!
