Hehe, I'm afraid there isn't a general way which automatically leads to a good logo.

Indeed a logo should be created in vector, hence the current forum.

Before you start drawing, start brainstorming.
Name of company, branché, style of production/business, colors that can be affiliated with the product/branché/company name (red is more active and passionate, blue is more trustworthy, etc. learn the colour philosophies).

For more on colours and interesting pallettes google for colourlovers.com & adobe kuler.

If you come up with an idea, make lots of variations around that idea. Let someone else see the results and comment on them, talk with people about the product/branché/company and look for interesting visions on it.

Never hurts to look what other companies use as identities, but be inspired and original, not a pirate!

Assuming you have the "creative" skills and the personality traits necessary to be successful in the industry, you can start by letting your friends and family know, join business groups, network, offer freebies or reduced rates to your local charities and/or schools....etc. You should have a website with a portfolio (I should follow my own advice there!), and at least business cards that you can hand out to everyone. Best of luck!

join contests, get noticed, you'll find clients that way and most importantly build your portfolio... the rest as they say will follow.
