5. Designing For Yourself Rather Than The Client

Probably my biggest problem when designing.

I've seen that link many times, and I completely agree with every statement and section on it. I agree, design is unfortunately based around a comfort zone, and the truly great/ memorable designs are the ones that break those rules.

The article is really good. I think every designer has to agree with the points mentioned in the article.

i see that throughout the contests we have many entries that are total fad-related. its like a rain of bottom reflexes and gradients, and glass effects. Or am i being too picky? :(

by the way, at least here at brazil, we have categorized 3 design 'workplaces', or so to speak. One of them, the design office, is the mostly client-related. we have the ad agency, where they're more related to the campaigns, the marketing and spreading the message, and the design, illustration, photography studios, where the designers are mostly free to create within their 'style', with the approval of the client. So i think the rule about designing for yourself is not totally strict.

very usuful article, but for rule # 2 Relies On Trends...
let's look at shell design, that simple design was reshaped along the time. I think a logo should be up to date, and this means knowing the treands....and using them.
But this is just my opinion....

You hit that one on the head, So many times I see designers using 2, 3 even 4 fonts in a logo. As much as it is soooooooo wrong, I still have clients that want this done...

I will also agree with this. It's too bad that this happens so much as it is Marketing 101. 2 fonts CAN work for a logo, depending on the color similarity, what industry the logo is a part of and how busy the rest of the logo is. I do a lot of logos for wedding professionals, and usually am using 2 fonts for the logo. However, since it works well with the overall feel of the simple logo design, it makes for a clean yet modern looking graphic. Any more than 2 fonts is way too many.
