In both application you may do almost everything if you know how. Effects like gradients and shadows was better in AI before corel X6. For me corel is better because I am faster there. Here is some shorts which everyone should know:
Algin objects
First select object which you want to align then select object to align with, after that just press
"C" for centar horizontal
"E" for centar vertical
"T" for top
"B" for bottom
"L" for left
"R" for right
This is for corel

It is good to you make some extra short cut, maybe for "copy properties from" "copy effects from" "place inside power clip" etc.
Here you have tutorial how to do that

For me it is easier to use Illustrator when making logos or simple graphics and I am not good with Corel but been with Corel for almost a year there are tools which is hard to use but whats good in corel is that its very light and fast to load and also you can make multiple pages very helpfull when making multiple pages design like if its a book or something. but if youre gonna be designing for logos and stuff or banners i would prefer illustrator because it is very user friendly and you can find tons of tuts for ai compared to coreldraw which is very helpful when you are doing self study of that software. aiiighht

For me, I prefered AI. First it is widely use, Second its friendly user compare to CorelDraw and easy to use vector based software.
But frankly I tell you the truth, CorelDraw was my first software use for designing. Sooner I realize that AI is the best one, thats why I shift to AI and always use it for all of my designs work.

Illustrator for me! Main reason is it is an industry standard, cdr files can be very difficult and frustrating for clients to work with. If the designer doesn't convert or save the cdr file correct then we have many problems with source files.
As a designer I have to go with illustrator for any logo or signage work.
