The whole jist is that a crt will show colors more accurately...so they are slightly better for print work... however i have been in a few design houses that use the Apple flat screen... and it seems pretty accurate... the 20" is only $799

Go get a $489 20.1" widescreen LCD (Dell 2005FPW) off eBay. Cheap and is very nice.

crt's are generally a lot better for design work, especially print.
although saying that i don't really see it as a crucial thing. I find that the colours on my laptop are close enough (i always crosscheck on a crt anyway).. to this point i haven't had to do anything where the colours had to be EXACT.

Part of the reason that CRT monitors are currently better for graphics is that they offer higher contrast ratios as well... It's on reason why LCD images appear a bit more pixelated than say an image on a CRT monitor... I'm not sure exactly, but I'm going to guess that on LCD's because of the contrast issues the closet contrast ratio is selected and it may then cause each individual pixel to jump to the next nearest contrast setting.
Until LCD monitors reach the same clarity as CRT's I'd say first purchase a CRT and it'd never hurt to have a dual monitor setup in the future.

Flat panel displays also can obscure fine lines along the horizontal and to a lesser degree the vertical. This can bump up printing costs and represents pure wastage.
There are plenty of occasions when this kind of possibility needs to be ruled out beyond question, hence, professionals tend to go with the faithful and un-rivalled crt display.

Isn't most design firms use Macs? (I don't want to start a discussion about this!!! That's in another thread.) But most new Macs (should I say all of them) come with a flat panel anyway. So........
Actually we do have a Mac here that has a CRT (ViewSonic) hooked up to it, and it looks quite crappy :-) Ok, it's not the best monitor. But the rest of the Macs and even the PCs have flat panels.
