true that eximius, it is illegal to use the stock images commercially, without buying. And before the contest is over it is not commercial, it is similar to as browsing through stock site.

One idea may go across several people's head. There could be a confusion then as what is copied and what is not. It doesn't happen in blind contests, though posts may be similar but idea can't possibly be copied. So if an idea comes to a designer's mind after reading the brief, he should go through all the other posts and see if somebody else had it before.

I think blind contests are better due to the fact that you don't have to go through all the logos (100's sometimes) to make sure you're idea hasn't already been done. Also there's always some designs that are close to your idea and you're not quite sure whether to submit or not. With a blind contest you don't have that problem and you can spend more time on the design instead of trying to work out if it's safe to use.

Good post, though I do not know any designer who does not already know this stuff, and one needn't have gone to art school to learn about it. I would hope that a lot of it is common sense--don't steal from your fellowes. It's bad form and shows a lack of originality/thought process and not only are you doing your fellow designers a misdeed, you're shortchanging yourself and your clients. Copying things is how we learn when we're very young and it's how we hone our skills, but copying things when you're in the business of making a living (or trying to) and giving your client a unique identity is hugely unprofessional and unethical. Plagiarists are the reason I quit these contests around 6 or so years ago.

Fonts are categorized differently; it would be considered a breach of the end-user license agreement

What should you do if you find out that your work has been exploited?
