I understand most people would prefer the "Adobe: Back-scratcher 9000" for the low low price of $299 every 30 days. But for people like me, who hasn't had the necessary 4 year Design University course and just has a Wacom Tablet.
I use “Manga Studio Début†simply because it came with my tablet. And It was NOT optimised for Logo Design, but I manage to scrape by.
What free software is worth checking?

Use Photoshop for any photographs you are using, Illustrator for any vector graphics you create, and LAYOUT the business card in InDesign. This s how all three programs are meant to work together. Good Luck!

I personally would use a combination of a vector software and Photoshop, so Illustrator and Photoshop, or Toon Boom Studio and Photoshop.
Use the vector software to make your initial creation and Photoshop to touch it up, adding effects that are difficult to do in vector.

Illustrator, Corel and Photoshop for me, what can not illustrator, corel can and finishing later in Illustrator, Corel love for the wrong because of some wrong is not in Illustrator, for example. turning two curves in a space in Illustrator, Photoshop is good for the conservation of a work from Corel for example., or Illustrator as psd, for the latter may amend any smart object in Photoshop, etc. ..

I use to be a big fan of Corel Draw. But the more print shops I worked with the more I needed Illustrator. Now, I am a big Adobe fan. I use Photoshop and Paintshop Pro for photo editing and web based graphics that are going to be a png, jpg or gif anyways. I took a few courses on Lynda.com to get a handle on Illustrator and it was well worth it. One instructor has 4 courses... Introduction, Intermediate, Advanced and the Mastery course.
