Sketching is convenient and beneficial for design process. But what do you do once you've created a solid drawing? One of the most important, basic tools in the Adobe suite is the pen tool. By using the pen tool you can create a solid design. Try out to create vector art using Illustrator's pen tool.

Couldn't live without the pen tool but it needs a lot of practice.

Definitely! It's always good to remember the shortcut for that tool... hold option key (alt on windows I think) when the pen tool is active :)

Pen tool is really awesome. I occasionally have trouble making it behave as I want it to after I turn it into a curve. I have found a few ways to refine it but it does take practice.

If you have real complicated shapes it is often best to make many anchor points.

The pen tool is incredible, especially for lettering. I love the ability to make straight lines as well as curves with one tool.

80% of what I do in illustrator is then pen tool, used to be 95%. God bless my teacher who pounded the pen tool into my head everyday for a whole year.

It's hard to design a logo without knowing how to use the pen tool.

That's right, the pen tool is really an essential tool to master if you want to be good at this. Bit of a learning curve (pun intended) at the start, but you just have to keep at it.

Yeah, importing the drawing or scanning the original then using the pen tool is vital to do really fast work. I still think there is nothing close to as fast as a pencil and paper but after that...pen tool is the tool of choice.

Ok. Illustrator's fans using pen tool is essential, why not ask all together to Adobe to make or let us edit menus to have access menu with right mouse button, with the direct tools to add or remove vertices more easily as with Photoshop and not to mention the super tool to simplify paths

The "pen tool" is essential. But I love the "smooth tool" (access by clicking the "pencil [not pen] tool"). It is what it sounds like. A tool for making things smoother. But beware, don't make it too smooth. Almost every logo needs some kind of edge :-)
