This is a whole new ball game on a ball park on pluto.. lol... Besides trying to learn Ai.. You already want to do raster effects to vectors... I would suggest taking one step at a time.. For as you may find out there are so many ways to get the same result in Ai and Ps... Learning them all is an impossible feat.. I have yet to see one to call Adobe Master.. lol... So many hidden treasures within i dont think no one will ever master all of them

It depends what version of Ai you are using. If you're working in CS5 you don't need to use an opacity mask as there is a gradient option that fades to transparent. Otherwise in previous versions you will need to create a black to white gradient over the top of your object, select both of them and go to opacity mask > make. The black area hides the object and the white area reveals it.
