There's an even easier way to create tints and shades. Just use the "Color Guide" window and you can get all the shades and tints for a particular color all at once (Window>Color Guide)Dear cheru, plz check this link very helpful for you Creating Tints & Shades in Illustrator | WEB200 | Premium Design Works

You could also use the 'gradient mesh'. Although personally I prefer to use the Gradient tool or Blends. I've found that some commercial printers have problems with shading created using the mesh tool. Also you can have problems if opening it up in other software.

Clarify the question please.
Are you asking how to make gradients without using blends and gradients, or are you asking how to make custom flat tints?
Are you using transparency when trying to make tints?
Are you trying to use the Stylize menu photoshop filters?
Are your projects for print or only for web? Some tools have problems at some printers.
I do not know if these questions make sense to you but I am only tying to understand what you mean.
