1. Responsive Layouts
The purpose of this layout is to have a web design that is compatible to all devices (desktops, laptop, smart phones, and tablets.
2. CSS Transparency
CSS3 properties allow opacity edits on any element in a webpage. This gives control for transparency generation in any modern web browser.
3. Fixed Header Bars
Using CSS position: fixed; property is a good way to staple any header bar onto your site. This will offer scrolling navigation constant support
4. Large Photo Backgrounds
A large photo can serve as a full background for a website. This layout attracts photographer and photography fans.
5. Retina Support
Retina screens dense twice as dense as any other LCD. With the same number of physical pixels, but twice as many digital pixels that can fit into the same physical space.

Responsive design is a biggest thing, I guess - number of mobile visitors is still growing, according to web traffic stats.

Another trend this year for web layouts is the flat design... very "google'ish". Simple shapes, effects free, no shadows no glows.. I love it! :)
