In earlier decades, agencies would submit three logo designs to the client. One would be the art directors, favorite, (the most beautiful). Two, would be the research department favorite (the smartest). Three would be the most typical recognizable industry generic logo (the clients specifications). The final choice could go any way. It did not matter, all the bases were covered. The client has to pay for, and live with the final decision. For the designer, the almost random selection is frustrating and bewildering.
Even the most successful crowd source designers win less than 10% of their contests.
We often do not get to see the clients decision process. This makes it even harder. Client psychology is not learned in Art school.
Hope this helps...

If the contest has been running awhile, check to see if any of the top rated designers you like are competing. If the CH has eliminated or does not like their designs, think twice about the contest. Many Contest Holders have agendas or tastes which are not evident in the brief. Look for contests where your style works to solve the design problem and the CH is in tune with your abilities.
