I also often have a similar thing. the solution, when the export file to the ai don't use gradient. create a gradient in ai

well the first thing is to not convert to AI, save it as an eps file and do not expand any gradients if you have used them. saving or converting to eps should work every time for you. When you expand the gradients even if this is an AI file to begin with you get jaggies and a VERY complicated vector design, make sure your text is expanded out or converted

once you open the saved eps in illustrator you can then save it as an AI file

The simplest way is to export your graphics from Corel to PDF file, then open it in Illustrator and save it in whatever file you want.
Corel EPS gradient could also be broken in pieces sometimes when open in Illustrator. This is because Corel write files in different manner and sometimes Illustrator couldn't read the saved data properly.

You can from Corel Draw export your work in EPS format and import to Ai format, but some gradients in Corel will be different in Ai. The best is import without colors from Corel and colored objects in Illustrator, because Illustrator have more able staining for fill objects.
Corel doesnt have a mesh color fill, for example, and transparency settings for objects much simply in Ai, such as manipulate with Lens transparency in Corel.

It really works well. I have tried it myself a couple of times. Another way is import your artwork to illustrator and save it. Simple trick :)

Save the file to .svg and import to Adobe Illustrator, and a bit of editing would be good. :)
