I do not understand what you mean. EVERY screen on laptops (LCD or LED) are backlit, that is the way they are build! You say your screen show nothing but black when you power up? Does it work if you plug in an external display?

I just did a quick search so I may be wrong, but it sounds like your laptop might need a new LCD inverter board. It would be a good idea to bring it into a shop and see what they say. Inverter boards are not very expensive.
