To level up you will need to win at least  1 gold/silver and bronze and a 1on1 project

keep entering contests and you will level up

I recently joined the Design Contest. In addition, I participated in some contests, but I didn't get any points for them. Are there only points awarded after winning a contest, and what happens if I get a 5 star rating without winning the contest? Please let me know if I can get points for that as well.

@Annkitt, welcome to DesignContest! Client is giving ratings to designs he/she likes usually while contest is still running, sometimes if the contest is in expired mode. 5 stars is the highest rating in the contest, and client can give those as many designs he/she wants or like the most. Some clients do not even give ratings, it all depends on clients. So five stars does not mean you will win a contest. 

Accumulating ratings (and winning contests) will give designer better total score and level up his profile, which my be decision break point for client if he wants to choose designer for winner or for 1on1 projects.
