confused about what fonts i can use

Can I use "donationware" fonts? What if I use a "free for personal use" font?-can I then pay for it if my design wins? or is that prohibited? Can a CH buy a license or do I need to buy it?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, but I'm having trouble finding the information.
