Now I hear that newer, slimmer Macbooks (with Leopard?!) are on their way to the market... I know I can't afford a computer right now, but it will sure be tempting.

I use MSN Messenger, Yahoo IM, and iChat or AIM on my MAC, tpuentes.
You could still buy a MAC and it would work for your wife to communicate with her friends.
Maybe too little too late now though, huh?

yeah, I know but the camera doesn't work with msn
That is because they havent developed a good program for MAC, Yahoo has done so you cant mic chat but you can use a webcam and iChat or AIM is better you can mic chat and webcam.
There are some other programs as well. I do understand your dilemma though.
Get a Mac Mini something small and portable and not too expensive.

Actually its not that hard at all, i knew people that hacked their pc's and made they operate just like and MAC or rather function like a MAC the look and feel. You would basically need the same type of hardware but a different operating system is key! And Apple is based off of UNIX and they have their own programming in it as well.
If you research it UNIX is one of the best platforms for any computer. Stable, reliable, secure. The best!
