I felt the same way you do, so I purchased the Bamboo 6in X 3.5in. Mainly because it was the cheapest one I could find at the time and I am working on a budget. I found a really good sale on amazon and was able to get free 2 day shipping with it. Anyways I am so happy that I did not spend a whole lot of money on a tablet because I find myself using the mouse the most now at days, my work flow is way more efficient and I don't have define brushes in order to get the effect I am looking for. I admit there are those times where I use the tablet, but only when I am trying to achieve a certain style or look to my designs, mainly for T-Shirt designs. So t sum it up I would recommend looking for one that won't break the bank and see if you even like working with a tablet. If it turns out you do, you could always upgrade and sell the old one. If not then you didn't spend a whole lot money so you are not in the hole. Best of luck.

Be Blessed,

Jerehme

I agree, you do not have to buy a very complicated, advanced tablet, the cheapest one will do the trick unless you work with detailed illustrations then you would have to think about getting a wacom! but it is worth every penny to have a simple tablet :)

I just can't agree with the above opinions that buying a cheap one would do the trick and buying a really good (hence expensive) tablet is not worth it.

Here is my experience on the subject:
I do occasional illustrations but mostly the designs I do do not include "drawing". Still, since I felt that the mouse was really inconvenient and not precise enough for a number of actions, I bought my wacom intuos 3.
It was expensive back then, now it seems that intuos models are even more expensive, but still, this is my best investment ever!

You have to make yourself use it in the beginning. It is not natural looking at a screen instead of where your pencil is, so it takes some time to get used to. Again, force yourself to use the tablet instead of the mouse in the beginning! It pays out.
Now I can't imagine working without a tablet. I can never get the same or even close precision with a mouse. Not to mention functionality. Pen pressure and tilt options in photoshop are there for a reason.

Now quality vs. cheapest option. It's like drawing with a pen vs. painting brush. If you are going for something cheaper, at least get a Bamboo. Everything else will get you use the mouse instead of the tablet.
I have a fellow colleague who bought a "no-name" tablet almost the same time I bought mine. She is still using her mouse and having tried hers I can see why...

If money is issue, have you considered second hand? At least the old wacom models are really time resistant, mine is still like a new.
Also, ebay, there are some good offers there.

i'm convinced to get a tablet for myself too.
i've seen tutorial videos of sketching and brush painting cartoons on youtube
and it seems impossible to do it as fast and precise with the mouse.
tablet seems to save a lot of time

thanks

Hi jecrt, I bought a tablet and pen last year, but just can't get on with it, I think it is the holding a pen without looking at it bit! It was pretty cheap though, so that could be the reason and not very big either. It seems that when I lift the pen and put it back down it isn't back in the right place, if you know what I mean. I would love to buy a wacom as I have heard such good things about them, but after using the cheap one is has kind of made me wary of splashing out on something I might not get my head around! I end up pulling the plug out and back to my finger on the mouse pad! If you have a recommendation for a certain model that isn't too pricey I would love to hear about it. Maybe I can talk my husband into getting it for me for Christmas!! Cheers, Liz : )

Thanks DreamSky
I been looking into getting a Wacom Intuos4 or 5. I'm on a budget and the the 4 is priced well but I have read the 5 has some really good features like a lot of hand touch shortcut features. Does anyone have experience with these 2 tablets that can give me their feedback?

Dont buy anything else but a WACOM.. any model will do but dont get the imitator
Price is decent compared to when I first bought mine.. Yeah be expecting to spend sometime.. on correcting your settings and also getting used to finding your screen arrow not in the location you want it to be... but that only at first you will get used to it.. Lol I mare talking about if you have multiple screens... if your only on one screen you will be fine

Its a good investment and should replace your mouse in a few weeks or months depending on your learning curve...lol

I'm new to tablet but I start to like it very much, it is a little Wacom Bamboo pen and touch.... Love to play with brushes and the pressure options of the pen.

I have to disagree that "whichever tablet" will do. I own a big Genius Pensketch (9x12in), and I'm really dissatisfied. When it comes to tablets, my opinion is that you gotta go Wacom, I've had the opportunity of using several different ones, like for instance the little Bamboo, and I loved it, responsiveness is good, drivers are good, and customer support is supportive.
As for it's use, I've always found the tablets more useful to me in raster production or 3D, not as much in logo design, especially if the logo is formed comprising of basic shapes, so I guess it comes down to whatever works for you :)

Well, I got my tablet out again last week and tried to use it, but then went back to my finger on the mousepad! I will just have to save up for a wacom bamboo it seems!!

You can do some great things with drawing tablets for example making an abstract icon or a custom font is a lot easier than using a mouse I recently bought one myself and it is very useful.
